Referrers information for GP’s, Specialists and Allied Health
All patients will complete an aquatic physiotherapy medical screening form, to identify any risks or contraindications to exercise in a warm water pool. If any risks are identified, patients will be referred to their GP to assess appropriateness before commencing pool sessions.
In some instances, risks may be managed by limiting time and/or depth of submersion and slowly exiting the pool, in consultation with GP.
Contraindications Include:
unstable cardiac conditions, such as angina, blood pressure or a myocardial infarct in the last six weeks
Decompensated heart failure
Myocarditis less than 6 months
Unstable ischaemia
Uncontrolled arrhythmias
Severe and symptomatic aortic stenosis
Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy
Severe pulmonary hypertension
Active or suspected myocarditis or pericarditis
Suspected or known dissecting aneurysm
Thrombophlebitis
Recent systemic or pulmonary embolism
Resting systolic blood pressure above 200mmHg
Resting diastolic blood pressure above 110 mmHg
Resting heart rate above 100 bpm.
incontinence
open wounds (in some instances wounds may be covered by waterproof dressings, such as Opsite)
infectious diseases; herpes active lesion, Hepatitis A, MRSA, VRE, HIV, UTI’s, URTI,
uncontrolled seizures
Precautions Include:
Risk related to cognition and behaviour
Risk related to anxiety and fear of the water
Falls risk
Ability to communicate, including vision, hearing, speech
